Well, we put the survey out there, and you wasted no time answering it, actually causing the survey site to reach the total of 100 within a mere 24 hours of putting it up!
I promised to share the results, so here they are!

Have not really looked into it yet - but get the impression you buy from Amazon
More than that, the master list shows exactly which titles are actually region free discs and available from Amazon, and therefore importable safely and quickly at much cheaper prices with a much bigger range, as region free titles plays on all blu-ray players worldwide. The list titles are links to Amazon to make things even easier. |
2. |
I could'nt believe the price of blue ray dvd's here and to get the info that you provided to me was unreal. I was ordering some within five mins
Glad to help. |
3. |
I have now been through the process once and will approach the next effort confidently
I admit the first time I did it, I was nervous but ecstatic when it all went as smooth as smooth could be. Never had a problem, and I am sure you will find the same. |
4. |
If I order a Blu-ray on Amazon, how do you know if it's a region free?
I know it is hard to blindly follow a list, but I have collated a lot of homework, and it is based on many factors including which studio releases the title, and information from other independant international testers. So far I have never had an issue with a listed title not being region free. You may see a warning when purchasing from Amazon, but I encourage you to watch the video on my F.A.Q. page for clarifiaction on this. |
5. |
Not so much the tutorials, but I would like to purchase and receive blu ray movies in 1 weeks time and not 4-5 weeks. How can I arrange this as this is new to me?
Importing from overseas will always take time, but 4-5 weeks is unlikely, with most people surveyed receiving their titles using only standard Amazon shipping within 3 weeks. See below. Personally I order every couple of weeks, so I get something in the mail every couple of weeks regardless, and cuase the prices are so low, a couple of weeks in the mail means little to me. |
6. |
Just need clarification on mail delivery costs good idea to use a working example or a matrix/table showing benefits in savings on multi ordering. Might entice people to put more orders through.
I guess it's not a bad idea to add this on the F.A.Q. page. I know what you mean though. Amazon, like most distributors has a standard parcel fee, and then each title is charged above that. You can average the cost of the parcel fee downwards by adding extra titles. i.e. getting 2 discs means you are paying the shipping price + half the parcel price per disc, whereas getting 6 or so means the parcel price is only cents added per disc. I might try and explain this better in a F.A.Q. update as per your suggestion. |
7. |
you should also include UK amazon because sometimes they have the region that US amazon don't have and could be cheaper
Amazon UK are in a price bracket somewhere between Amazon USA and what we are forced to pay locally at retail stores. That being said, this is still a good idea as there are over 100 titles that are not available to us on the list, as they are not region free. Rather than pay top dollar at your local store, a list of what is available in Region B (our Region), imported from Amazon UK might be a nice little addition. Good suggestion. i will get to work on it! |
8. |
I have been into Blu-ray since 4/2007 and been buying titles from USA, UK & Aust.
That's great news. You were clearly ahead of your time. Hope the list is helping you with your passion! |

What this tells me is that over half of us have managed to navigate the system with no problems. I hope my tutorial has helped with this. For the 5% that had problems, please read over the introductory information again, read through this, and watch the F.A.Q. video, and please email me with questions personally.
For the 24% waiting to see how others have gone, hopefully you can be assuaged by the positive reports of success we now have coming in through this survey. It is clearly a system that functions in favour of our love for movies. Hurrah!
For the 7% still not owning a blu-ray player, I am so sorry! I didn't even take into account that some people may join without owning a machine, so I will add a hardware section in the blog. Also I am sorry that you are missing out on such a great format. Don't go without for too long :)

I did try to but some of the movie when after I went to the checkout says that its region 1 - or A only... so I backed out although your list said its a all region ones.... a bit confused.
Yes, this is a common complaint. We have tried to address it in our video in the F.A.Q. page. I can assure you the Amazon warning is nothing to be concerned about. Please watch the video. |

As I don't have a credit card I buy my blu-ray's off eBay.
Valid point. I don't recommend ebay in almost every situation (for many reasons including I have lost money more than once, and even got an email last week from a user who'd been ripped off $40US on ebay for a 5 minute Hancock preview disc).
I prefer instead to use a safe reliable merchant with an organized system that works like Amazon, but Amazon won't take Paypal, as they are a direct competitor. If you can't use a credit card, you may have little choice. I might add an ebay search box to the list and some carefully chosen safer links to ebay with tutorials when I get time to make things easy for those that need to use Paypal and are stuck in this situation. |

Was gona purchase I Am Legend but the delivery time put me off a bit.
Delivery time will be different for every person depending on where you live and other factors. I would suggest you test the waters with a couple of orders and see how it differs for you. |

I have been buying DVDs from Amazon for at least 3yrs so its no problem for me. |
| 8. |
I placed an order but through the process on the amazon site it came up with a warning that one of the discs was a region us/canada. Except it was supposed to be region free. I was a bit confused with that but proceeded anyhow.
You were right to proceed anyhow. This confuses everyone. See above. |

I am worried about their playability in Aust. I'd rather get them from you, or other Aust distributors - hopefully to reduce the risk of that

was already buying from Amazon US but had to go through their entire list of BLU-ray movies to find the 7 that were region free, All of their dvd I was getting Blu-Ray from Amazon but had to go through their entire list to find their few region free.Their DVds however as you know can be played on any dvd player once you put in the code.
Interesting point about the DVD playability. What this user is referring to is that many, (not all), DVD players are either sold as multi-region OR have what is called a region free hack available, that allows you to play imported DVD's (not blu-rays) on your DVD player.
Of course if you have a DVD player that supports this feature, and a TV that can play NTSC DVD's (Blu-ray is neither NTSC or PAL so this does not apply to blu-ray, nor is there a region free hack for any blu-ray players), you can also order DVD's from Amazon for your region hacked or multi-region DVD player if you so desire. Might be good for some documentaries or music videos. Otherwise I will stick to my blu-ray. Thanks for the pointer! |

The Region A/B threw me off on Amazon - but read/saw your clip and worked it out...
Cool. Glad it helped. |

I don't mind paying for a international courier ( UPS, FED EX etc...) but can't find these options in checkout.
Amazon has 3 flavours of speed for delivery. I have actually heard reports from another site that Standard shipping is on a par with the 2nd fastest. In my experience though, it has been a few days faster, less than 2 weeks using this option. You can always pay extra again for the fastest option. You can double check this setting on the final page of ordering. |
3. If you have ordered from Amazon, how long did your delivery take to arrive?

What this tells me, is that 2 of you were really lucky, or used the fastest shipping option. And most of you got deliveries in 2-3 weeks.
From further analysis it appears that both under a week were from Queensland, Australia, although others living in Queensland took up to 3 weeks.
The longest times, (fluctuating from 2 -4 weeks), were Western Australia, and parts of New Zealand, (seeing 2 weeks there too though), and Adelaide is doing surprisingly consistently always appearing in the 2-3 week bracket.

In fact, video in general seems to make things easier and I don't mind making more so will try to add some more video F.A.Q.'s and tutorials to make questions smoother.
I am actually a video producer for a profession, first and foremost, and not a great web designer. I hope to get my website looking better down the track.

When the amazon price comes up when hovering over the movie title.
Yes, I discovered this was possible to add to the code in the website quite by chance, and I think it is great to have as I was going to make a page showing just blu-ray covers, but I think this is better and also shows up to the minute prices, and availability which is cool. |
| 6. |
Maybe get an aussie club going so people can order once a month all together and hopefully save even further on postage and bulk buying???.
This would be hard since we are all so spread out. If you want to save on postage I would recommend buying a minimum of 3 titles at a time. This is what I like to do as it reduces the per disc average price.
I have to say though that the savings are so massive compared to local prices, the shipping doesn't really bother me at all anyway, but yes, more titles is a bigger saving. |
| 7. |
The length of the list is a bit overwhelming. Would it be possible to have a "New in the last month (or perhaps 3 months)" sub-listing
I have taken this on board, and in the meantime I will leave the 'orange entries' which are new titles in the last month on the screen up for a minimum of 2 months before removing them, so the newer titles can be easily spotted for longer. |

titles that havent been released yet in australia, get it sooner than u would in australia
I usually mention in the weekly email if we are getting a title a lot earlier than Australia / NZ. Marking these on the list would be a bit difficult to keep track of, I'm sorry. Usually though we get a good selection of earlier titles by importing this way. |

Wow, an overwhelming majority of votes goes to a hardware section, closely followed by a region free list for Asian titles, and a PS3 Games Cheap site separate to this one.
The PS3 games site is VERY CLOSE and you should have had an announcement on that by 25th July, 2008. It will grow like this one has with trailers and a blog shortly following.
The web address for it is:-
www.ps3gamescheap.com
I am working on my blu-ray hardware research and hope to start a category dedicated to it in the blog with sub-categories for projectors, peripherals etc. Cool, eh?
The forum is still in the pipeline, but I think the trailers and foreign lists will be completed first. Ask and ye shall recieve!
As for the others, Caption competitions are not in demand enough to worry for now, User Photos may just slot into the blog when I get good ones as a matter of course, and info on posters / soundtracks etc. are coming too.

How about a list with only the region free list on it to make it easier for us to choose one's we want rather then check through the entire list of Blu-rays
A lot of people want to check on titles they know have come out, so what I might do, when my web skills improve, is have a switch at the top of the list to only show with and without. Your thoughts? |

Uno what is useful - a firmware driver page to upgrade the software of blu ray players. I have noticed when i purchased National Treasure 1/2 from Amazon (US) that the menu interface was way slow - I dunno why - maybe its the drivers or blu-ray movie itself? Perhaps a commentary on what the "Wow" Blu ray movies are (must buy section) and a bit about new blu ray recorders/new products affiliated with blu ray - is it worthwhile section?
I think I would agree that we should have a section on 'exceptional' titles, as voted by you. So if you buy a disc that you think exceeds expectations in special features, quality of picture and movie rating, please send me the title, and I may start marking a select Best of on the list. I feel that this is a good suggestion and may help people looking to start a collection pick their first titles well. |

Region free blu rays (from other areas) sound good as I lived and worked in Kuala Lumpur for 8yrs+ and hve watched some awesome eastern movies especially in the horror genre from Japan and Korea
I agree that I should add this as for Westerners, many of these fantastic movies actually have English subtitles, or voice over, and also some of our community are of Asian descent, and would enjoy having thee available. I will get on to it soon. |
| 8. |
I have made purchases from UK amazon.
I have taken this on board and will be adding this as well. In fact I suspect I will be making a 'super list' in the near future. |

Wow! Half of us (including me), use the PS3. I can see why so many people are finding the links to the Play-Asia site to get their games for half price so useful.
For those who don't get their games yet from Play-asia, you are paying too much down town, and Play-asia shipping is fast!. Check out the list at:-

Love this. All motivating stuff. |

Bluray dvds out class any pictures that we have seen at the cinema.
Interesting point. The smaller size of the TV really showcases 1080p, but the cinema is a film projection and is actually closer to 4000p if we had to put a figure on it, but the screen is so big, it often looks sharper at home. One day in the distant future, we may well have 4000p (4k) in our homes and you can guarantee I will be there telling you about it. In the meantime a 4k camera has already been produced and is shooting feature films. The camera is called RED. It's very interesting. |

Fantastic site - Good on ya mate! I've only purchased National Treasure 1/2 and Terminator 3 from Amazon so far - if I would have known about this site earlier, I could have saved hugely. Do you think tv series box sets will come to blu ray? How about a page on that for the site, pretty please?
There are some series already on the list, such as Sopranos, Smallville, Weeds, Made Men, and more. Perhaps I could highlight these better. I will look into it. Thanks for the praise. |

For your information I have received confirmation from BBC America that the Blu-ray version of 'Wild China' due to be released in USA in August is ABC (All regions). (Ihave already ordered it!). The High Definition format is best suited to wildlife/nature documentaries (in my opinion) but so far titles are sadly lacking. A good example is 'Tiger Spy in The Jungle' which was filmed in HD but has only been released on DVD (UK last month).
That's great news. I love the documentaries as well as it really showcases the medium, especially the Planet Earth boxset is money well spent. |

Just wondering will an American playstation3 work in Australia? I am borrowing my sisters at the moment.
You will need to make sure the voltage of the unit can handle a 240 Volt input, otheriwse you will need to get a transformer. Also you will need a plug adapter to fit the wall socket.
You should be able to play all Region A and ALL discs, but not play Region B titles, and Playstation 3 games should mostly play ok. |
| 17. |
Thanks for all of your hard work, I really enjoy reading about all of the new titles available and would enjoy additional information in relation to PS3 games.
Thankyou for this, please check out our PS3 Games page and new site from the 25th July. |

Great effort. I am sure we can all say that we thank you for your information and your time to help us all out. Thankyou.
And to all of you, thankyou for pioneering in the growth of this new technology with me, as movie lovers, as colleagues, and now that you have shared with me, as friends. |
The telling of a tale is a beautiful thing in my opinion, being able to watch it all in blu-ray quality simply adds to the creators desire to present their vision properly.
With such a diverse and wonderful group as yourselves sharing in these dreams with me, I want to thankyou individually for your input, and for your love of movies, as I am learning from all of you more about genres I would not normally think to enjoy.
With your help I intend to make this site simple, yet complete with excatly the info we need to keep getting what the name of the site advertises.
Blu-ray Movies Cheap!
Cheers
